My teaching experience encompasses many areas of percussion. I've been teaching private drum lessons throughout my time in college, and also served as Percussion camp counselor at Mansfield. The percussion camp at Mansfield insists vast exposure to all areas of percussion, including drum set, mallet percussion, marching percussion, steel pans, and orchestral percussion, so a wide-spread knowledge of the instruments is essential in being a counselor for the camp. My teaching style relies heavily upon training the ear to dissect what it is hearing. Developing the ear is crucial to being a self-reliant musician. In drums, the visualization how a rhythm works in time is essential to being able to perform that rhythm. Dissection and mapping are the key to furthering one's abilities on the drum kit. In guitar or in piano, being able to isolate frequencies with your ear will lead you to a more accurate understanding for chord structures and progressions than simply looking up tabs, which are often deeply flawed. For beginners I like to use books and a few easy songs to get the student started. As skill level grows, I try to encourage students to form their own chord progressions as well as using songs that I choose or a song the students chooses that will encourage them to play and learn more songs on their own.
