I was a student leader in the marching band, serving as the woodwind captain for the marching band and the senior student conductor for the concert bands. For beginners, I typically start with the very basics such as putting the instrument together(if applicable), posture/form, and fingerings. For beginning students, we will spend a good amount of the first few lessons in developing core fundamentals. Once we have a solid foundation, I will start to add in some exercises. I work out of many books to expose my students to different methods of playing. For more advanced students, I will work with them on developing more characteristic sounds. Piano - I find that no one method book is completely standalone, so i incorporate several method books...Piano Adventures, John Thompson's course, Piano Pronto, and some self-composed music for my youngest students!  Intermediate-level pianists start choosing some of their own repertoire as well.
