I usually start my beginning piano students who are children, in Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Lesson Book 1A. After a few months, I begin adding solo repertoire that is appropriate for age and ability. For middle school age students and adults, I start with Alfred's Basic Piano, Adult, Level 1. I believe the number one rule of playing music is to have fun. Stressing this frequently with my students to remind them to not get frustrated with themselves if they run into any challenges with learning their instrument is a part of my teaching style. One of the many motivational sayings I tell them is, "Nothing in music is hard, it's just unfamiliar." My teaching style can most accurately be described as patient and creative. Music should be fun. The student should enjoy practicing.  It is my job to create a lesson plan that allows a student to progress steadily, without straining the limits of their abilities. My tip on keeping students inspired is to give them the responsibility for their music. I show them how to make their instrument sound as good as possible as early as possible. The target they have is to focus on making a brilliant sound and I try to empower them to teach themselves – to me that is the definition of being a successful music teacher.
