With beginner saxophone, flute and clarinet students, I like to use 'Standard of Excellence' books (and typically 'Faber Piano Adventures' with beginner piano). I find that these books address the fundamentals, that are crucial to learn while young, in a fun way. Specific interests and styles can be explored too, while at the same time getting a well-rounded musical background. With more experienced players, I use a combination of materials with more emphasis on personal goals and interests. Read More

I am an organized teacher and lessons are structured to accommodate technique development and fun solo work. Each month we will set a goal, and build a weekly plan to get you to accomplish that goal. I ask students to keep a journal of their goals and practice time focus so we can measure how we're working to our goal. We will always do warm up exercises, scale of the week to improve sight-reading, finger twisters to improve technical ability, and solo work of your choosing to put all that practice into action! My teaching experience dates back to just a few years, as I had surpassed my own instructor, and I have consistently been teaching in others homes since then. Near the end of my schooling, my instructors started to realize that they couldnt teach me much more, and suggested I go out on my own and start teaching kids what I know. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for students, as it teaches discipline and a greater understanding of what theyre doing. Read More
