I like to say my teaching style is very open to interpretation. I like to mold my teaching to the student rather than assuming the student will mold to my teaching. I believe in consistent and meaningful practice. That means that students are expected to practice at least 20 minutes a day. I always say that its better to practice 20 minutes for 5 days than 2 hours in one day. With my teaching students are also expected to come up with a goal for the end of the term and to see it through. Read More

I then usually work on scales, technique and etudes, and then work on any major repertoir that may have been assigned. I then finish by setting goals for the week, and answering any further questions. I a very upbeat and engaging teacher, and I am not afraid to adress problems head on. I find it important to both acknowledge accomplishments and use effective criticizm. I expect the highest level of comitment and work from my students, but enjoy helping students reach this level, and to become excited and proud of the results this yeilds. Read More

Based on the fundamental teaching of Suzuki, Paul Roland, and the sensibilities of modern music, my pedagogy features composers from all eras. Even beginning strings will learn different styles very early in their pedagogy, and it will inherit the strengths of each particular instrument. Read More

The key to it is finding that spark, or that thing that serves as the roots from which your musical knowledge grows. It can be a single piece, and genre of music, or even a rock band. I like to try finding what clicks with a student, and work that into as many lessons as possible. Read More

So, I went back to school for another master's degree, and taught music in CPS - performing three nights per week with my the Bartels/Benson duo, Connexion Band, Prohibition Orchestra, Bryan Skyler Trio, and other groups.
