I started teaching almost 10 years ago as a way to fill my weekly schedule with musical things. I've always really enjoyed the challenge of teaching, whether it be a musical or personal one. As a teacher, I draw upon my experiences as a student, thinking what I needed that I didn't get or what I experienced that I didn't like, and vice versa. As a student, I didn't like to practice, I didn't like to go to concerts, and I didn't think what I did was special. Read More

I really do cater each lesson to each individual student's needs and ambitions. One of the biggest skills needed as a musician is knowing how to practice and improve. I focus this a lot. I love seeing students improve and flourish. Read More

I began teaching privately as a high school student, working with begnning students at the middle school. I have taught privately in my home and in students' homes since graduating from college. Regular practice is very important and something I emphasize with my students. If a student does not enjoy their time playing their instrument, they will not want to put the practice in and lessons will become a point of argument. Read More

For my teaching style, I have a very organic approach. The main goal as a teacher is to develop a passion for the instrument and the music. This is crucial for seeing any development at a decent pace in any student. What happens otherwise is that the student does not want to practice, or practicing without focus. If a student is passionate about the music and their instrument, then they will want to practice, and will teach themselves. Read More

Music has been a significant part of my life since I was a child, and it's importance has grown as I've gotten older. I started, as many do, in the fifth grade when I started playing the saxophone which I continued on through high school. When I was 13 I started playing the electric guitar, and I would later switch to the classical guitar at 19. In college I learned some piano as well as bassoon in addition to the methods and materials classes that I had to take as a music education major. Read More
