For beginning cello students who are children, I typically start with Suzuki method elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. At the bare minimum, there are four skills that one must become adept in in order to play cello. 1) Proper body movement and coordination 2) Left hand technique (the hand which determines the notes on the instrument) 3) Right hand technique (the hand which manipulates the bow and produces sound) 4) A basic grasp of music theory Every student of mine will be trained in the classical sense, and learn some classical repertoire, because classical technique on the cello is the foundation for any other style the student would like to perform. I offer the Suzuki method of teaching for all beginners and pair it with Essentials for Strings to engage music theory into the lessons. As the students progress there are more books to choose and duets to practice Chamber Music and more advanced techniques. For Beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Method, and essentials for Strings.
