I began teaching guitar professionally for Roger Williams International Music Studios in 1973. We presented a challenging program with accelerated lessons, using a type of computerized teaching. For beginning students, I typically start with the Alfred or Mel Bay Method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce other repertoire where appropriate. For students who have some experience, I will try to find out what the student is interested in, and direct my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging. Music in the school system is taught backwards. If you're a beginner, you were put in a beginning class. this makes it very difficult for students to advance quickly because they aren't playing music with people who are more advanced than them. I make sure the students have the ability to play the instrument before they learn a ton of theory, because knowing how the wrritten form of music work without being able to play them is recipe for frustration.
