For Piano, I use several method books, including the Thompson Method, Shaum, Alfred, and Bastien. For Guitar I use Hal Leanard, Mel Bay, and several others. I also use interactive software of various kinds. And for Jazz, Blues and Rock improvisation, I use Band in a Box to provide backing tracks for the purpose of practicing improv over chord progressions. Band in a Box allows the student to simulate the experience of playing with a band in various styles and genres, with the possibility of change the chord progression and also changing the key and tempo. I first began teaching at the age of sixteen. I was hired to work at Berkshire Summer Music, a music camp for talented young children. I cater each lesson to each individual student and their needs/desires, therefore no lesson or student has the same lesson plan. I can teach for different instruments and various styles, so those as well as the student's personality/skill level all factor in to how I will teach them. However, 3 things that I pretty much universally teach to all students of all styles are 1) scales, the fundamental building blocks of all music; 2) music theory, every style has it's own version of music theory and it is immensely helpful in understanding how to play it; and 3) learning songs that interests the student, because nobody is going to want to stick with music if they are forced to play songs that someone else wants them to learn. I was raised with music. My parents favorite pasttime was listening to my Dad's collection of over 2000 records and having me decipher the lyrics. Classical, folk, blues, rock, metal and more. At 17 I played my high school battle of the bands and won with a standing ovation from the audience. Read More

I use repetition quite a bit but that's the best way, I find, that someone learns. I also encourage them to investigate and practice things that have not necessarily been assigned in order to see how serious they are. In other words, when they're not practicing what I show them, I expect them to experiment and investigate the fretboard on their own and then if they do come across something cool, then we can build off that Read More
