I started teaching guitar and bass in 2001. I started teaching ukulele in 2013. Over the years, I have taught professionally at schools, park districts and music stores- in most cases becoming the top teacher (meaning, I was the most requested and had the best enrollment longevity). For all students during the first lesson I have them play something regardless of their skill level. Based on personal experience I’ve noticed that not all students have the same level of ability. For example in drum lessons I’ve had some entry level students sit down and play a groove and have another sit down and have no coordination. My experience with learning was fun. Since I was learning multiple instruments it was fun to tie everything together. I could say the best part while learning was understanding theory...that part of my learning opened up many doors for me musically. Depending on the personality of each student, I adjust my expectations and decide how tolerant or strict I should be. I truly believe that a teacher needs to view each student as a unique individual with unique needs and abilities, and adjust the teaching methods and ways of communicating the material accordingly.
