For adults, we begin by discussing goals and working through some basic exercises to assess skill level before finding the best course of action. For voice, I use no one instructional book or music, however in piano for children I do typically begin with John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course before moving on to appropriate literature, and for adults I like to begin with Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course. I write all my own lesson materials focusing on what the student needs to know to play, understand, and enjoy music to achieve their goals. I have used several method books in the past but find them all limited or focused on styles or technique that is not what the student wants or needs to learn. I can teach from any established method if that is preferred, but instead enjoy challenging the student to understand what music is and how music is played on their chosen instrument, not just to read. Professionally I've been performing for over 30 years, and teaching music privately for over 15 years.  I perform primarily in Arizona, but have performed elsewhere in the U.S., and in Mexico as well. I graduated from Temple University in 2011 with my Bachelor's degree in Music Education.  I was a saxophone major, but I have also studied piano since the age of three.  I enjoy performing in musical pits, which is where I picked up the flute and the clarinet.  I am currently a choral teacher at the high school level, but I have previously taught in a K-8 school, as well as several years in a daycare setting with very young students. As a teacher, I have been fortunate to teach students ages 4-65 from all backgrounds and skill levels. I began teaching private voice and piano lessons at a music studio while I was in high school. That is where my love of teaching was born and I have made teaching a priority in my life ever since. I have also been fortunate to teach internationally.
