My musical experiences started at church in the 80's when I discovered that I could sing really high notes imitating Christian artists like Sandy Patty and the late puertorican soprano Yolanda Vadiz. Those experiences motivated me to consider studying music seriously not just like another hobby. I started studying voice techniques at the age of 20 at the Sacred Music Institute in the Methodist Church in Hato Rey, PR. For very young, or beginner students, I use elements of MusicPlay, which really make learning the basics of music fun and applicable. For intermediate or slightly older students, we would go over the basics of singing technique, including posture, breathing, tone, register, and interpretation/performance, usually in that order. We learn through vocalizes and art song, moving to more complicated pieces as progress is made. I have several methods, but mostly I teach to sing based on solfeage and songs, either italian, german, latin, spanish, and french. Solfeage helps the student to understand better sheet music and also helps understand the real emotion of the piece, among other things involved in a piece.
