I started teaching around the summer of 2013. My first pupils were children that were active members at my old church. They were interested primarily in acoustic guitar, I discovered how wonderful it made me feel to see their faces "light up" when they learned their first chord. For young beginning piano students, I typically start with Alfred's Basic Piano Library for the classical approach or my own Christian Music Piano Library for a Christian or Gospel music approach. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce a solo repertoire appropriate for their age and skill level. For an adult beginner, I try to find out exactly what the student wants to be able to do and then guide my instructions accordingly in order to keep lessons relevant to the end goal. Read More

I try to use psychological judo to draw a student into why they need to learn what they think is unimportant. An example of this might be scales, which are boring to some. I'll show them how learning scales is critical to chord theory and construction, as well as improvisation. I can sense when some aspect of a lesson does not appeal to a student and try to approach it from a different angle, or even return to a song or exercise later if it is too hard initially. Read More
