For my beginning students, I will typically teach out of the Sound Innovations methods books and incorporate certain lessons from other method books as well. After a foundation has been established, I will introduce solo repertoire and begin to work toward recitals and local competitions. I introduce concepts from a variety of composers, styles, and periods, but I also want to encourage the child's love for music so I take into account what things they have heard and possibly want to learn. I believe that no one system works for every student. My main focus in teaching is to find the best way for each student to learn and to enjoy playing. I know that if the student doesn't like their lessons, it makes it more difficult to learn and may lead to that student deciding they no longer want to play. In each lesson, we will work on as much technique as possible, but as long as students continue to learn and are motivated to play, I won't push them beyond what they are ready or willing to do. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument.
