MM, Colorado State University, Violin Performance BM, University of Denver, Violin Performance

Awards:

2010 - 2nd place solo honors competition, Colorado State University

2008 - Colorado State University Graduate Fellowship

Overview:
I am a classical violinist performing and teaching in the Las Vegas area. In 2008, I received my bachelor's in violin performance from the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, and in 2010 received my master's in violin performance from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.  I have taught for over 10 years and also played with the Fort Collins Symphony in Fort Collins, CO and the Cheyenne Symphony in Cheyenne, WY from 2010-2014. I moved to the Las Vegas area in October 2015.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching in 2005, as an undergraduate student. I have taught consistently since, in both private and group lessons, working with students from ages 2-adult. I focus on Suzuki and traditional methods, depending on the needs of the student. I believe that all students learn differently and that lessons must be flexible to accomodate the learning style of each individual student. In my experience, students under the age of 8 benefit greatly from parent involvement, so I ask that parents of younger students sit in on their lessons if possible. That way, parents can learn with the student and help them with their practice at home. Parents of students under age 6 should plan on learning to play violin along with their child. I have experience teaching all ages and enjoy working with adults as much as with children. I encourage any parent who wants to learn to take lessons, too.
METHODS USED
With beginning students age 7 and younger, I start with the Suzuki method, which involves learning by ear. This way, students can focus on learning to play violin without struggling to read music at the same time. Separating the two skills can help beginners pick up the instrument more quickly. For older children, we do a combination of Suzuki and traditional methods, depending on the student. I will always help students with note reading once they are ready, but do not require they start at any particular age. For adults, I begin with basic techniques and note reading, then work to incorporate more advanced skills once the basics are comfortable. I follow no particular system with adult students, letting the student decide what they want to work on. For intermediate or advanced students, we will come up with a lesson plan together during our first few lessons, based on the student's experience, strengths, and weaknesses in playing.
LESSON STYLE
I believe that no one system works for every student. My main focus in teaching is to find the best way for each student to learn and to enjoy playing. I will work with each student to figure out their goals, whether they are to play in a recital, prepare an audition, master school orchestra music, or just to learn for fun. Practice incentives can be used as a fun way to encourage students to keep up with playing in between lessons.

Kayleigh makes me feel like "I've got this" even when I know her ears must be splitting. (I'm having a little problem with bowing control.). But she keeps telling me I'll get - and I am progressing!!!

Kaleigh is always on time and gets right to the lesson. She seems to be knowledgeable in her trade. She is soft spoken and seems to be a gentle spirit; perfect for our granddaughter. After only 4 lessons, I feel it is too soon to give more of a review, but she seems to be working out well for us.
