Some of my earliest memories are from learning how to read music. I've been involved in piano and violin for most of my life, beginning both early in elementary school. I studied privately for roughly ten years under various instructors while in school. My instruction consisted mostly of solo performance pieces, but I was fortunate to be able to enjoy many years in the Idaho Falls Youth Symphony as well as experience the Idaho All-State Orchestra and the Teton Chamber Orchestra. Finding recordings on music apps or youtube can help to learn the piece in a different and fun way, because its an excuse to watch youtube! Besides scales, etudes, and pieces, I want to encourage my students to come to me with any questions about the music they are playing in their school music classes, orchestras, theory questions, and help with any technical instrument issues, like tuning, fixing strings, finding a good shoulder rest, how to rosin your bow and how much to tighten it. Each person is different. Because of this, I always make sure each student is going at their own pace. At the beginning of the year, I sit down with each student and we set goals for our playing. I want students to feel motivated and inspired always, and to practice because they love it- not because they feel forced. I have competitions within the studios to motivate practicing, and talk about what we can do at home to make the violin/viola more fun. Read More

I approach piano and violin instruction from a foundational, constructive perspective, combined with building rapport and reciprocal clarifying communications. The student is encouraged to ask questions, to feel free to make mistakes in order to take the risks necessary for true understanding and growth, and to engage in productive discussion leading to personal clarity with regard to their playing. My love of the violin is something I desire to share and teach for all those interested. I studied violin privately under Rosalie Macmillan who is a world-class violinist. I played in orchestras all throughout high school as well as in the pit orchestra for my high school's production of "Pirates of Penzance". The technique I inherited is slightly more unique and has refined my talents into something that has greatly enriched my life. Read More
