For 3-5 year olds on piano I use Wunderkeys and supplement with Bastien Music Tree and music I have written when note reading is introduced. Usually I continue into Faber and Faber but Wunderkeys is adding more method books for beginners 5+ and I may start using that once it is available for purchase. I have taught in the classroom and privately for over 10 years. When students start on their instrument I encourage the parents to be part of the lesson so they can help and encourage practicing at home. I do not use traditional methods when I teach, though I may borrow from some. Instead, I observe the student for a few lessons and determine their learning ability. For children with a strong attention span, I focus on developing the basics, such as bow hold, sound production, and listening. Depending on the student's ability to hold the bow, I may allow them to grab the bow if the are struggling with the proper bow hold until they are more comfortable holding it; this also applies to adults. Creating a non-judgemental atmosphere, where students are free to experiment, make mistakes, and try again, is crucial for learning an instrument such as the violin. With this instrument, repeptition is key to learning. I also strive to set very clear, manageble goals, so students feel a sense of accomplishment at each stage. This sense of accomplishment is motivating to the student as well as the teacher!
