For beginning to intermediate students, I use the Suzuki Method. Each successive piece introduces a new skill, so that the student is always building on learned skills. Dr. Suzuki, the founder of the Suzuki Violin Method, spoke often of the “Suzuki Triangle.” This is an equilateral triangle with Parent, Teacher, and Student in each of the corners. The triangle helps illustrate that each role is equally important. I firmly believe that students are best served when their teacher knows and cares about them. This attitude toward teaching helps me to tailor instruction to students' needs rather than following a prescriptive method. I usually begin lessons with a brief, informal conversation where we discuss the student's week and talk about things that are important to them. Over 175 students have come my way through the years. Many have stayed with me until they left for college. Other students have come to study and then go on to pick up and master more instruments. Some have graduated in music education, music performance and music therapy. I can't imagine a more rewarding job! Watching music skill develop in each one is my absolute highlight. My teaching experience dates back to 2013, where I first began tutoring local junior high students for the summer band program. I have been teaching private lessons and studying how to be a better educator ever since. My private home studio has been running for over 3 years now. In private lessons I incorporate a complex combination of music theory, ear training, popular music, and classical! I create play-along videos, so that kids have something specific to practice at home. I use "Read this First" as a note reading book. Students play along with me and also by themselves at lessons. Eventually kids can gather together and play as a group if they wish to do so. I start with memorization, and easy ways of writing down the songs... and eventually kids will learn to read music, after they've secured a basic technique. Read More
