Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! I tailor things to each students age, level and goals. I think anyone is able to learn an instrument and understand that we each learn and approach things differently. Some students are more oral or visual learners. Good practicing habits and proper technique are key. Fundamentals are important for the creating of greater skill potential. In the beginning, I do focus on form as well as producing a good tone out of the violin. Piano is similar with form. I believe the skills used in learning music can be used in learning other skills in life. My goal is not to just make a great musicians, but rather to encourage others in their endeavors and to teach a method of practice and learning that can be used in other areas in life. Read More

My style is light and cheery - I make the kids feel important and I acknowledge their progress regularly. I am not a knuckle-rapping teacher. Discipline comes naturally out of a love of learning and I notice when they are practicing and let them know and that induces more and continuous practicing. I don't guilt-trip them if they don't - I use a "try to do more or better this week" approach if they have a low practice amount last week! Read More

I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. I have a violin performance degree and long term Suzuki teacher training from Northern Arizona University. My passion is teaching the joy of music! I am most qualified to teach violin and viola, but I am also comfortable teaching beginning piano. Besides my Suzuki training, which makes me an ideal teacher for young children, I love in working with adults and teaching all styles of music including fiddle.
