I start the student first by using The Mastery book by William Dick and Laurie Scott to learn the basic technique of the instrument. As soon as I think the student is ready I start teaching simple songs by rote. When it comes to drills/exercises/scales/etc., I try to use challenging pieces to substitute for them as much as possible. This makes practice more enjoyable, and gives the student more pieces (as opposed to exercises) to play for family and friends while still building on their skills and keeping them challenged. A huge part of music is collaboration and performance with others, so I make playing along with others on various instruments a part of my teaching once the student is sufficiently skilled for it. Music has been one of my passions since I was a little girl! I took up piano at age 8, violin at 13, and drums at 15. I've been known to belt out a tune here and there, too! There is nothing better than having an afternoon to lose yourself to creating and playing music. In high school, I was Concert Master of the Philharmonic Orchestra. I've had the opportunity to perform on the drums at various venues and was invited by my drum instructor to return to the studio to become an instructor myself, where I taught for three years.
