For beginning students, I typically teach using Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book and the Flesch Urstudien book. Every student is different. I treat my students as individuals and adjust my teaching style to achieve optimal results. My belief is that performed music should be fun for the performer as well as the audience. I will always give my best effort when I teach but students are also required to put in effort if they want to learn and become passionate about music. I encourage my students to have regular practice routines but make sure they are not overwhelmed. When I teach I also like to ask my students questions (such as how much bow do you need for this note? or what is the best approach to make this phrase more expressive with your left-hand?) so that students can learn to come up with solutions by themselves and can feel comfortable practicing without my always being there to guide them. Although this is my first official teaching job, I began teaching back in 2011 during my freshman year of high school. I had the pleasure of conducting and teaching both concert and chamber orchestra. I then became a student assistant my senior year and was able to do one-on-one's with the younger students. A student will develop a loving connection with music under my study, whatever that music may be. More foundational technique learning such as practicing certain scales, arpeggios, etc. will be evaluated. Many students have different preferences for their practice and may want to structure it differently than how is commonly taught. I make it vital to make practice something that can be enjoyed while also being a puzzle or challenge just enough to make the student want to keep going, learning things on their own that I can guide them along. My teaching style is full of open communication. I think that it is important that students set goals for themselves. I allow my students to pieces that they want to play. Students need to be able to see their own progress. I know that not every student will be outwardly excited, but I know that every student feels internally great about accomplishing goals.
