I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. I like to get to know all of my students, it's a unique challenge as a teacher forming individual lesson plans in accordance with the students personality. That is a big part of what makes teaching interesting, and I really enjoy when students and I can work together to play pieces that they want to play. It's not about progressing lightning fast all of the time. Music is more of a marathon and there is a ton of literature out there, so with students I always try to remind them of that and encourage exploring music as a world, and not as a competition with others.
