I believe in the "one thing" lesson. If a student can improve on just one thing in a lesson than that lesson was successful. My past students would probably say I am overall a nice guy but incredibly picky when it comes to perfecting a piece and hold each of my students to a very high standard. I firmly believe that students are best served when their teacher knows and cares about them. This attitude toward teaching helps me to tailor instruction to students' needs rather than following a prescriptive method. I usually begin lessons with a brief, informal conversation where we discuss the student's week and talk about things that are important to them. A doctoral candidate in violin performance, I have performed throughout the US and Europe. I hold a Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan, an Artist Diploma from the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings, and a Bachelor’s Degree from Brigham Young University, where I also taught as an adjunct faculty member for violin and viola university students. Playing alongside classical artists such as Lynn Harrell, Robert McDuffie, Gil Shaham and Stefan Jackiw, I have also been invited to perform with Michael Buble, the Osmonds, and most recently with The Killers on Jimmy Kimmel Live. I create play-along videos, so that kids have something specific to practice at home. I use "Read this First" as a note reading book. Students play along with me and also by themselves at lessons. Eventually kids can gather together and play as a group if they wish to do so. My teaching experience begings while my undergrad. I began teaching private lessons part time when I was 19 years old in different academies in my city and since there, I have been teaching both in academies and at home. I have taught both violin and viola and some of my students are now persuing an undergrad degree back in Colombia. For me, flexibility is truly important, meaning that, even though Im a trained classical musician, I understand and also enjoy not playing classical music all the time. Read More
