I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who enjoys helping students unravel the mysteries of music. I graduated with honors from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2014. While studying at IUP, I was principal bassoon of our ensembles and played in many chamber groups as well. In 2015, I won the Graduate Assistantship at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. For beginning students, I initially focus on their setup and how to hold the instrument properly. Having this solid foundation helps in the future to avoid injuries and negative habits. After that, I use the Essential Elements books and Suzuki method books as a guideline with supplemental materials. At this point I would also begin introducing solo repertoire appropriate for a first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my teaching according to their level of interest, keeping lessons engaging and fun. Many times that includes playing fiddle tunes, which is very exciting to me too, since I have been involved in Irish culture since I was young. Every student moves at a different pace, so I move as fast as they are looking to move. My biggest goal for a student is for the experience to be good, and to be fun. I often say that technique is teaching a student how to make ten shades of blue, but musicality is deciding which shade of blue to use. Once I graduated college, I began teaching private lessons locally and did virtually at times as well- strings, music theory, and keyboard. I started up and directed a kindermusic program for students ages 2-5 in Erie, PA at a daycare, which grew quickly and required me to be on my toes at all times to keep up with such young students- all about balancing fun and education!
