For beginning students who have never touched music in their lives (mostly children), I start out with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book of their chosen instrument. From there, we learn how to read music, play in time, and play the instrument itself. Once the student feels comfortable with the practices in the book, I move on to introduce solo repertoire to prepare for a recital.
