The first lesson is always a trial lesson, in it I attempt to access where the student is musically. I also use the time to find out what the student's musical goals are . We look at things like reading, theory, dexterity on the instrument. If the student plays a wind instrument we look at things like embouchure and breathing. Once I have gotten a good idea as to the student's skill level and have spoken to the student about their musical goals and interests. Read More

I formally began teaching private lessons fifteen years ago and love to see the rapid musical growth that can be achieved with focused one-on-one instruction. For the last ten years, I have been a band, orchestra, and choir director at the middle school level in the Long Beach Unified School District. This experience has helped me to streamline my music teaching process and become a much more efficient teacher in private lessons. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet
For beginner students, I will start by first teaching them the basic techniques of trumpet playing(i.e. proper breathing, posture, instrument holding, and buzzing techniques). After going through the basic techniques of trumpet playing, I will have my student work out the Sound Innovations for Concert Band method book. Once my student completely learns the first Sound Innovation method book and gets a grasp over the fundamentals of trumpet playing, I will introduce them to trumpet exercise books such as the Vizzutti, Arbans, and Clarke books among others to build upon the fundamental techniques that they have already developed. Instruments: Trumpet, Bass Guitar, Double Bass, Acoustic Guitar
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. After their first solo piece, there will be room for expansion into different genres of music. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and is prepared to study, and I will guide them in my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Whether it is theory or academia or the idea of honest expression, all these facets of teaching have always been inspiring to me. I can mock up many different playing situations to accommodate any level of player. Read More
