I'm a quietly passionate instructor motivated by my love of music and my students. In 2016, I graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Arts in English, with a Minor in Music. As an undergrad, I often found my love of music creeping into my major coursework-- including my thesis! I've loved practicing and performing for over a decade (which is also more than half of my life!). From receiving my very first "Band Student of the Month" award in the fifth grade to helping soon-to-be-fifth graders achieve that goal themselves, I cannot express how much I love this instrument and the opportunities it has provided. I love watching my students grow. I believe in making my students think to get the answers they are looking for. I am not a fan of "rote learning" so my lessons tend to include a large amount of cognitive thinking by me constantly asking questions and making you pay attention to your own playing habits. One of the biggest mistakes I notice younger players make is getting into a groove and not listening to what they're playing. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet, Euphonium, French Horn
For all students, I will do a fair amount of playing be ear and call and response in hopes to avoid an unhealthy association with printed high notes, which is a very common occurrence for trumpet players. I will prescribe various books or exercises from books such as Arbans, H. L. Clarke Technical Studies, Chris Gekker's Slow Practice, Getchell Book of Etudes, Concone Compete Solfeggi, I Reccomend, Allen Vizzutti Trumpet Method Book, Vincent Cichowicz Long Tones and Flow Studies, Bai Lin Lip Flexibilities, James Thompson's Buzzing Basics, Saint Jacome, Bousquet, Charlier, and others as I see fit for the student. My goal in lessons is to teach students how to practice. So in my lessons I show them methods for warm-ups, exercises for workouts to develop range, articulation use, and technical playing. I have each of them learn how to play lyrically and musically. In the background to get them comfortable with playing music well and reading it easily, I work with them on music fundamentals to build a sturdy foundation. Read More
Instruments: Voice, Trumpet, French Horn
Everyone learns and masters music at their own pace. Light bulb moments are the moments for which I live! Nothing says, "I am learning," like seeing a student understand a concept or command a new ability for the first time. I set realistic goals and help guide my students towards their goals. I keep my lessons relaxed but full of energy. A huge fan of positive reinforcement, I do my best to make sure that I give a complement or praise before I make any correction. Read More
