Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. I have had the pleasure of teaching for the past 5 years publicly and privately. I have lead masterclasses and group lessons as well as private lessons and large ensembles. I teach my students the fundamentals of the instrument heavily as it helps provide the foundation for all musical concepts. I typically use Steve Hedrick's Band Fundamentals book with beginners. If a student is currently enrolled in a band program, I am comfortable using whichever method book their teachers has selected. I gradually begin to introduce solo repertoire and creative activities such as composition and improvisation. With more advanced students, I will typically use a "cornerstone" book from the literature pertaining to their instrument. My lessons typically consist of a 1-to-1 ratio, where I will be playing as much as the student I am working with. As a student, I know the difficulties of overcoming bad habits. For this reason, my teaching focuses on establishing and correcting these bad habits so that the student can focus on what they want to do, play music. The trumpet and most musical instruments are extremely unforgiving and will become jealous when left untouched for a long period of time. I fell in love with classical music while watching Leonard Bernstein conduct the NY Philharmonic as a young boy.In 1979 I graduated from Eastern Nazarene College with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Music Education. For the past 40 plus years I have taught music to children and adults in school and church settings, and at a performing arts center.
