It is important that the student comes to their own realizations about playing using me as a guide, rather than being spoon-fed the information. Knowing how each student learns most efficiently is critical to success in a lesson, and I believe that each student should be taught using as multiple instructional methods as well, including sound, sight, and feel. For beginning students who are children, I typically begin with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for the basics as well as repertoire, along with my own additional methods of practice. Once the student has a grasp on their fundamentals, I will begin to progress through the book and introduce larger solo repertoire that would be appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I show them my methods of beginning to play the trumpet, as well as something that may interest them and guide my instruction accordingly to keep lessons engaging and exciting no matter the level of their ability. My love for teaching began as a peer tutor in college. I tutored students in piano, guitar, bass ear training, and music theory. I began to love teaching when I noticed the change and progress it creates within people. While in college, I taught at a musical theatre camp as a music teacher. I taught music theory, ear training, and vocal music. Right after I graduated college I was accepted into the music education program at Teachers College Columbia University where I received my masters degree in music education along with certification in New York state to teach Pre-K through 12.
