I have my own set of warm-ups and exercises that I have compiled from a multitude of method and technique books. These aim to improve the students over all technical skill set. I also assign a variety of etudes appropriate for the students level to help develop their musicianship. I supplement most lessons with music theory that is relevant to the trumpet and/or the piece playing. I began teaching piano privately in undergraduate music school by tutoring piano to music majors that were non-piano students. It was required that all non-piano stsudents must take 2 semesters of functional piano. I continued fulfilling this role from 1981-1985. In 1997 I began teaching private piano lessons to students in my school that had an interest in learning piano after school. Determining the range of an individuals learning styles and how they operate allows me to better gauge their needs and accomplishments. whether I should be quite literal, or use analogies, metaphors and similes. Knowing a students aural depth helps me guide listening. An idea of kinetic aptitude and tendencies helps me construct the "procedural memory" of playing efficiently. I teach as if I am training my replacement so I can attend a concert and hear them play; specially when I am too old to play but can still hear a good concert.
