It is very important for students to grasp the fundamentals. For intermediate students, we would progress on a track and focus on what they had for goals. I focus on a skills based learning regimen. I often start beginners out without using a book, just learning to make the instrument perform before we add the complexities of music notation to the mix. With more advanced students I work on the small details of mastering the instrument, and translate that into performance.
