I like to start where the student is. For my youngest students, we begin with the basics of counting and the music alphabet. For older students and adults, I assess prior knowledge and go from there. i like to have the students help me create up to three goals for the semester or year so that we can have something specific to aim for and measure. For complete beginners I use the usual method books used in the public schools.  As I get to know the student I tailor the lessons to their skill level and personality to teach the fundamentals.  More intermediate students I look at what they do well and areas they need to work on such as embouchure or breathing technique.  I teach theary and make sure the student learns how to read music.  More advanced students I will teach repertoire and advanced books such as Arban's Mehod book.  I will always make sure the fundamentals are taught regardless of the skill level.
