I find that some students like to practice in one sitting, whereas others prefer to practice for 10-15 minutes before taking a break and then returning. For students of all ages I use a combination of the student's own personal experience with music along with trumpet specific brass pedagogy to achieve a student's personal goals. One of the first discussions we have is what kind of music the student likes/dislikes, what kinds of music they've performed and/or studied, and what their individual goals are as a musician. From there we collaborate to tailor a custom plan for the student; parts of this plan include a warm up routine and practice schedule, short term and long term goals, frequent listening suggestions and aural analysis, and repertoire and projects that are tailor made to be applicable to a student's interests. For the very beginners, I like to use Essential Elements 2000 or Standard of Excellence Book. Depending on the student's development the next step will be H.L Clarke's Technical Studies. After this, I would find easy music that the student can identify with and be interested in, such as Disney books, Harry Potter,etc. For the more advanced high school students, they will also use Clarke's Technical Studies, Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for trumpet, and Rubank Method Books which come in Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced levels. When dealing with the trumpet, no matter the students age or experience, I always prioritize relaxation and efficiency. The trumpet can be a physically demanding instrument and it is important to practice and perform in a way that will allow the student to achieve the maximum gains with every lesson, while also minimizing any risk of strain or overexertion.
