In my opinion, my goal for the student is to be motivated, and stay motivated to try to also work at their instrument outside their lessons on their own. I would not want to cram information down their throats, but I also would not want to spend too much time on tasks that would get the student or myself carried away. The process of slowing things down and working them in chunks is, in my opinion, very efficient because the retention sets in really well and it also helps the student get in the habit of how to practice properly, and this goes for any level of student. Though I feel it is important that each student progress at a pace that it is comfortable for them, I expect each student to put forth the effort. The lesson should not be the only practicing that the student accomplishes during the week. It is important to practice daily. The lessons should be a place to show off your hard work. I am graduating from Pensacola Christian College with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies and my two areas of focus are Music Performance and Education. For my beginner students, who are younger, I start off with the Faber series in the Primer levels. After progressing through the first few levels of the series, I then start to introduce solo repertoire depending on the interests of the student. For my older students, we also go through the Faber Adult Piano Adventures book, where we learn the basics of piano along with some fun pieces. I teach more information outside of the book which is not taught until later to get ahead. Read More
