I'm a passionate and curious musician. I'm self-taught in the styles of classical and jazz from when I picked up the clarinet I found at a Salvation Army at the age of 10. I taught myself until I started college and studied with Kelly Lake, Stephanie Gardner, Jeff Quamo and Cris Inguanti at NAU. While working toward receiving my Masters in Clarinet performance at NAU, I taught music theory and aural perception at the undergraduate level. In addition to teaching I've had two pieces written and recorded for me along with a couple tracks on a comedian's recent albums. My beginning students usually start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements, Accents on Achievements, Do It Play In Band, and much more. Once my student is able to grasp basic fundamentals and a healthy proper tone and technique, I will then be able to incorporate solo repertoire for future recitals and contests. I like to maintain a fun atmosphere in my lessons. Especially for younger students, there will always be moments of frustration, so encouragement is key. The trombone is a very difficult instrument, especially for beginners, but with the right encouragement and dedication any student can thrive. Once a student reaches a certain level or age, I believe if they want to grow on trombone they will. I will give them more independence to set their own goals and choose their own repertoire. I love making music and helping students to be confident making music. I know that life can get busy and students won't always be able to practice every day, so I set realistic goals for them and emphasize that even just a little bit of (focused) practice is much better than no practice at all.
