A fun and positve, but honest environment, is the only way to keep students coming back for more lessons. I encourage all my students to perform in any opportunity they can comes along, and invite them to attend and be involved in any performance I may have as well. I am happy to work with students of all ages. Music is a skill and passion that you can enjoy all through out life, and it is never too early, or too late to get involved in it Read More

For my own beginner students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More
Instruments: Piano, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Tuba
For the very beginners, I like to use Essential Elements 2000 or Standard of Excellence Book. Depending on the student's development the next step will be H.L Clarke's Technical Studies. After this, I would find easy music that the student can identify with and be interested in, such as Disney books, Harry Potter, etc. For the more advanced high school students, they will also use Clarke's Technical Studies, Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for trumpet, and Rubank Method Books which come in Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced levels. My teaching style is guided by several simple principles: 1. Its all about two things; the MUSIC and RELATIONSHIPS. 2. It has to be FUN, or why do it? 3. Nothing is more satisfying (and fun) than getting better at playing an instrument. 4. To get better (and have more fun) you have got to WORK at it. (Hello, practice room!) 5. In order to motivate and help the student progress, I get to know the student as well as possible, model good playing and practice habits ( I play during lessons a LOT, and draw up sample practice plans for students depending on their needs and interests), help them establish GOALS, and use ENTHUSIASM, PATIENCE, PERSISTENCE, and EXPERIENCE to guide them along their musical journey. I began teaching trumpet privately 44 years ago. Over the years I have added voice, beginning piano, trombone, euphonium, and recorder to my studio. I encourage each student to practice several times a week for as long as they can. I find that some students like to practice in one sitting, whereas others prefer to practice for 10-15 minutes before taking a break and then returning. I convey to each student that working at your craft for 10,000 hours will make you an expert. Read More
