I like to follow a format for lessons, giving a certain amount of time to warming up, practicing technical studies and scales, etudes or lessons, solo literature and ensemble (duet, trio, ensemble) literature. I would encourage students to make an agenda for practicing, I believe many student need to learn how to practice, much like study skills, so they can make good use of their time. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has a grasp on the fundamentals of performance, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital or NYSSMA solo. After the student moves on from basic method books, I introduce more trombone-specific books such as Arban's Trombone Method Book and Rochut's Melodious Etudes for trombone. I graduated in 1981 from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Trombone Performance. I love how music is more than notes on a page. They're expressions of oneself. Knowing how to interpret these notes is very important to learning the fundamentals of music.
