I typically begin with fundamentals to get an understanding for what areas of a student's playing need to be addressed. I'll try to correct future problems that are usually caused from poor fundamentals. Following this, we'll take a look at Bordogni etudes to see the student's understanding of time and rhythm. I like to learn who my student is before starting anything. I want to know what their interests are and what their view on music is. I then take that and bond with them and teach them in a certain way that matches their thoughts and personalities the best. I like to have fun and not be too strict as long as the student is doing their work, but if they are not staying on track the fun is replaced with more focus on concepts to be sure they are learning what is needed.
