I have been teaching trumpet, improvisation and theory for ten years and have worked with students from beginner to professional level. I have taught private students, clinics, summer workshops and full band classes. I have worked with the Juilliard Outreach Program, Yamaha Canada, the Sterling Hall School and Roy Thompson Hall's 'Save the Music' program. I started teaching privately in college at Florida State University, and was even asked to teach for the F.S.U. summer jazz camp as the middle school instructor for their big band. I also taught trombone masterclasses as well as a small group. In 2008, I graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trombone Performance. For a young child to love music, a teacher must introduce it to him or her in a passionate way, without forcing it one the child. The struggling student is just as capable of loving music, just as much as the accomplished one. As I mentioned earlier, all students learn at different paces, so I teach each student as close as humanly possible to their level. For beginners of any age, I begin by discussing goals, milestones, and how we will achieve them. I do use method books, but only recommend those that will be useful in and out of lessons. I keep lessons fun and engaging, and always demonstrate before expecting the student to do the same. Fundamentals as building blocks are always needed, but I never keep a learning plan the same from student to student- goals (that can always be changed) are what I use to guide a student to be confident for any performance.
