For beginning students I select special lessons. I am careful to choose the appropriate music for each age. if there is a child, for me is very important the relationship with the parents, because they know a lot of goals from the child. I tailor lessons for each individual student based upon their age, ability, and cognition. I am a big believer in repetition, and reinforce fundamentals heavily. For all students, we will work greatly on building good habits right away. We will do exercises for breathing, embouchure, and hand position. From there, we will work on tone quality. As we begin learning notes and rhythms, we will use method books such as Essential Elements, in addition to easy songs for beginners to get comfortable practicing and eventually performing. While I am new to taking on private students of my own, I have had many opprtunities to teach groups and individuals in their studies. In high school I often volunteered with elementary and middle school students to work on band repetoire and fundamentals that would benefit them in their classes. I was also section leader throughout high school and was the principle saxophone in college, and would assist my fellow students in grasping diddicult sections and techniques. Read More

While I was in the Marine Corps I would give lessons to students from different high schools when going on recruiting tours. I am a big fan of the Rubank elementary, intermediate, and advance methods. In addition I like incorporate sight reading into lessons due to being a common element in auditions. For high school students the I use Rubank books and supplement that with Rose etudes as they are often use as audition material in KY.
