I believe every student pursues music for a different reason, so I approach every student with a custom curriculum. For all students I stress the importance of scales, arpeggios, ear training and scale patterns (3rds, 4ths, etc) to improve technical facility from the beginning. For beginners I typically use the Rubank Edute book to begin reading music. All students are introduced to 'Top Tones for the Saxophone' by Rascher early on to improve range, intonation, breath support and tone quality. Read More

I began teaching during my years as an undergraduate. I have worked with private students of a wide variety of ages. I have focused on sound production, saxophone technique, ear training, music theory, and repertoire in lessons. I keep an open mind as a teacher and do not try to push students into playing music that they are not interested in. As a starting musician, I personally would go with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements 2000. It is a great way to start the student because the book breaks how to learn how music in appropriate steps. As someone who is in junior high leading into high school, I love to use scales, smooth air movement, flexibility for band, scale fluency, chromatic scales, improve exercise, and performing tip exercises.
