2015 - John Phillip Sousa Award at LaSalle Peru Township High School for superior musicianship and outstanding dedication

Overview:
Music has been a big part of my life since I started playing my very first instrument in the 5th Grade. I use music to get around the tough times and play music because I am passionate about it. My name is Andy and I am 21 years old and I am currently about to graduate community college with an Associate Degree in Music Performance. My goal in life is to be able to perform for a living and/or become a future educator. I started out with flute in the 5th grade and then moved onto saxophone at 6th grade because I wanted to expand my mind a little. I kept playing saxophone until today of course. After I graduated Tonica Grade School I went off to LaSalle Peru Township High School. I was a saxophone player in the LaSalle Peru Township High School Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and Pitt Musician in the Musicals. We were involved at different contests and competitions. We got the opportunity to perform at the Peoria Civic Center in January 2015 for the Illinois Music Education Associate. During my 4 years of band, my teacher Kyle Adelmann demonstrated the art of walking that fine line between working hard and playing hard and creating that viscous cycle of how hard it is to be a successful player but at the same time makes you realize how fun it can be to be one of the best players. Kyle Adelmann showed that growth everyday was way more important than winning trophies at competitions which made me and others in the group a better person today. After High School I went off to Illinois Valley Community College and I was involved in the College Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and private lessons to be confident in performing and to improve more and more at playing. Throughout the summers I am involved in the Peru, Spring Valley, Depue, and Oglesby municipal band. We are a concert band with current and retired music teachers, current and retired army musicians, amateur musicians, or even side musicians in our local area called the Illinois Valley. We rehearsed a couple days of the week to go over new music. A lot of the concerts we sight read music without even looking at it once. The main goal of this organization was to entertain the audience but at the same time we managed to become more independent of playing and sight reading. I also take a lot of opportunities to do a lot of side gigs. Last year around this time I was asked to come up and play at the Green Mill in Chicago to perform with lots of great artists/musicians. After that great opportunity, I get asked to do a lot of local musicals as a pit musicians and I just keep performing in local community bands. I do wish to continue my education to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance after that I plan on getting a teaching job and trying to find a job as a musician in the bigger cities
EXPERIENCE
I don’t have a lot of teaching experience but I do know that once you have done a lot of performing you build up these skills and feedback from other people telling you how to do it and you’re able to teach it. Once you know what you’re doing and know the material, I feel once you teach you find a way to teach and it all just falls into place. I did a lot of studying of music since I started learning it till now. College has taught me a lot of how to do it and sort of teach it. Me performing a lot has gave me experience to do music. I believe I'll catch a really good teaching style when I start teaching it. My performance history is a great way to look of how good of a musician I am.
METHODS USED
As a starting musician, I personally would go with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements 2000. It is a great way to start the student because the book breaks how to learn how music in appropriate steps. As someone who is in junior high leading into high school, I love to use scales, smooth air movement, flexibility for band, scale fluency, chromatic scales, improve exercise, and performing tip exercises. Usually the older you are and you know your part really well I usually end up teaching you solo pieces. My biggest thing is intonation and scales. Those are two major keys you should learn at any age.
LESSON STYLE
I'm a passion man about music and I love doing what I love the most. Progress is really important. I'm very okay with taking stuff slow if you need it. I set realistic goals for a reason. That reason is that things happen to stop us from moving on forward, whether it is not understanding something or life happens. I am a laid back guy but to a certain extent. I am very okay with having some laughs and giggle throughout lessons and having side conversations but know that work comes first. At the same time I am brutally honest. I am not afraid to tell you that you are not progressing very well or you sound really bad. Please note this isn't to hurt you. I want you to have fun but I want see you be successful in you music. I'm very good at throwing wonderful comments on your playing. I love giving positive feed back to you. I award students who improve. My biggest complaint is that you work hard and try hard. I will let you slide if you are struggling on certain parts but you ask and you actually try to get a passage right. I don't want me to assign you something and you just go home and let your instrument and music sit till we meet again. Don't let that become a habit because I will get upset. Over all I am a chill, laid back, fun, and hard working man. We can have fun but at the same time we need to focus on getting better.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
