With younger beginning saxophone students I start them with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book 1. This Provides a great foundation for students to start on and benefits in the long run. For mid range skill level students we start with (depending upon skill) the Rubank beginning or intermediate method book. This provides a lot of melodic material for them to grow as a musician. I like to demonstrate concepts by modeling so the student knows what they are supposed to sound and look like. I will sometimes play to give an example or send a link to a recording to help the student. I encourage students to go at their own pace. My musical journey began at nine years old with piano lessons - not at all an uncommon beginning but an important one. Less than two years later I joined the band playing clarinet. As a high school student, all-state performances and honor bands fiilled many weekends, and I had the privilege of playing regularly in my church on the piano. While playing in a youth symphony as a senior, we toured in Austria absorbing centers of musical history and playing in four uniquely different venues including a wing of the Schonbrunn Palace.
