I start lessons with new students by asking what they would like to learn and ask what their overall goal is so I can better adjust lessons to achieve the students hopes and goals. For beginner students I start with helping them understand the parts of the instrument which I believe can help a student better understand how it works and therefore how to better perform on it. I do believe that while scales, arpeggios, and exercises are very important it is also very important to create fun exercises that are actual music instead of just a scalar excercise, because at least for me playing scales for an hour a day is not why I got into music.
