For beginning students, I typically start them with learning the notes, staff, beats, etc. Once the student has mastered those abilities, I begin to introduce playing "by ear" as I like to call it. This process involves the student choosing the song and learning how to play it solely by listening to it and figuring out the chords. For beginning voice students, I typically start with a combination of folk songs and basic musical theater pieces as we establish proper breath support, tone resonance, diction and music reading skills. For beginning woodwind students, I find the Standards of Excellence Books to be a great starting point to establish technique, breath support, musicality and basic music reading while still allowing the capability to add beginning solo pieces depending on the student. For beginning students, who are starting from an early age, I typically combine playtime and learning. For example, for the youngest students, I use the analogy of the seven colors of the rainbow to learn the music notes. Throughout my years of teaching using this technique, I've received a lot of positive feedback from the students that as learning kept them interested and excited about learning the instrument.
