Theory is emphasized as well as technique for both the piano and voice student. Most voice students will get a basic knowledge of music reading skills while piano students tend to have a bit more in depth studies. For beginning young students, I typically start with Music Tree or Piano Adventure. Once the student has progressed, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. For adult students, after seeing their level of playing, I would find the style of music that they are interested in. If students are interested in learning specific music pieces, we can focus on that until feeling comfortable and confident then move on to similar style so we can keep that interest going then move on to more advanced pieces. I typical use Alfred's, Piano Adventures or Bastien's Piano Basics for children and I emphasis doing scales/finger exercises. I also encourage ear training. For Intermediate students, I use Bach, Burmuller, and Sonatas. Though I would love to follow books to make sure no fundamental skills/knowledge will be missed, from time to time, I would love to keep students motivated by letting them to pick a song they want to learn (no matter their levels are) and we will be working on that song.
