I began teaching myself to play Guitar as a teenager and eventually taught myself to play other instruments as well. During this time I would learn all of my favorite songs by ear or with the help of tabs. Once I had started attending the Academy of Contemporary Music I learned more advanced music theory that relates to general music and Guitar. My biggest method I will focus on is learning music by ear and applying that to the other various aspects of music, like reading and writing. I feel that being able to play music fluently by ear is a skill most musicians tend to lack at times, and isn’t really a focus on in say a high school band or orchestra setting. I emphasize the method of divide and conquer; the idea that if we are confronted with a complex problem, then we isolate each difficulty in that complex into a collection of simple problems. We master simple situations on the guitar individually until we are performing complex tasks that were once physically impossible. Ultimately, I think a blend of competence in technique, tone, and interpretation with a comprehensive outlook over specific works, studies, and the instrument itself will foster rapid development in a beginner, define the path of an intermediate, and supplement the advanced player.
