I like to get my students to a level at which they can actually make/play music first, using their current favorite genre of music. The sooner they can make sounds on the instrument that resemble something close to "music," the sooner they'll fall in love with the instrument. For older students I pick method books more specific to their age, learning style, and progress while still focusing on key points of interest for the student. I am not a taskmaster. I will gladly give homework and direction for what to practice, but it is not my job to berate students for not practicing as much as I would like them to. Everyone understands that music requires regular practice, and I believe that if it is worth it to a student to find the time to improve rapidly, they will make that time. I think that when teaching an instrument it is very important to get the student off the ground and playing with others as quickly as possible. I am a strong believer in teaching a few chords and one scale and letting the student begin playing with bands and making their own music. I think that music is a personal thing that shouldn't be too strict or rigid from the start. Read More
