I have had plenty of experience teaching both privately and in a classroom setting. I began teaching private lessons on the piano and violin in high school, where I mainly had elementary school beginners. In college, I continued to teach private lessons and also had plenty of opportunities to work with students of all different ages and skill levels in a variety of settings. My methods will depend to a degree upon each individual student's musical tastes and ambitions. For example, I would put much more focus on developing picking hand foundations for a classical guitarist while the fretting hand would receive more early attention for the metal shredder. I will go over all scales, (major, minor, blues etc.), chords and their different styles, styles of picking, hammer ons, pull offs, vibratos, and yes, improvisation and soloing. Although there is this flexibility, I will always bring motivation and make the lessons as fun as possible to make the experience more interesting.
