My name is Hank, and I recently graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. My primary instrument is the piano, but I also play all string instruments (violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar) as well as the trombone. My methods will depend to a degree upon each individual student's musical tastes and ambitions. For example, I would put much more focus on developing picking hand foundations for a classical guitarist while the fretting hand would receive more early attention for the metal shredder. This said, there are common general goals that can be set for all guitarists as they track and improve their skills. For beginning students I usually start with basic chord formation to get them into playing songs as soon as possible so they dont get bored with the basics. Then I move onto movable chords, scales, and music theory. Once they get to more advanced techniques I will give them simple exercises and the songs they choose to learn will put them into context. There is nothing more rewarding for me than the "lightbulb" moments. To see a student light up with excitement over the satisfaction of knowing he or she has been able to achieve or conquer a concept or a piece of music is so awesome for me. I have experience participating in, working with, and conducting college level choirs and I am still gaining experience. I have also passed Piano Proficiency in my undergrad education. This proficiency test covers major and minor scales in all twelve keys in two octaves with proper fingering, playing a piece from memory, sight reading open score (a four-part choral work), and I have had to harmonize a melody using the three basic I, IV, V7 chords in a major key and i, iv, V7 chords in a minor key.
