I've been a music lover for as long as I can remember. I began playing guitar at age 13 and have continued to play for the past eleven years. I have been in numerous bands and played hundred of shows in Chapel Hill, Raleigh, and all around the state. I play acoustic and electric guitar as well as keyboard-piano. I have years of experience giving guitar lessons as well as recording music in my studio. Read More

My teaching methodology for students who are beginners typically consists of using music that the student is interested in as a template to teach them the fundamentals of music and basic technique for their instrument. After the student has made the connection between music they already love and their instrument, then I can start to challenge them with more difficult repertoire and musical concepts. For intermediate to advanced students I will help them work towards specific goals they have or help them set appropriate goals for themselves. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar For Kids. For teenage and adult students I use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Complete Edition. For classical guitar students I use Aaron Shearer's Learning the Classic Guitar Volume 2. After a student has a grasp over basic technique, chords, and reading I like to split the lesson between book work (note reading) and teaching students to play songs that they enjoy. Read More

My approach to teaching encourages the student to not only learn at their own pace, but is judgment free and allows for the student to grow as s/he wishes. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. Read More

I realize that each student is different, so I treat them as individuals. However, I do stress regular daily practice, even for short time periods. Regularity in practice is more important than long practice periods in my experience. I try to apply the three T's in my own playing and gradually incorporate these into my teaching, TASTE, TONE and TECHNIQUE. I enjoy seeing students progress because it reassures me that I understand the subject well, You have to know a subject 3 times as well if you teach it because a student will always ask a question you never thought of.
