I'm an experienced and knowledgeable instructor focused on developing the student's ability to share music. I have a BA from St. Mary's College and have taught college level courses at Winston-Salem State University, Salem College and NC School of the Arts Community Program. Currently I play solo, in a duo and have four bands in different genres, Jazz, Blues Bluegrass and Praise. Seeing a student take on a challenging piece is more rewarding to me than anything. When I see a student struggling, I will offer the techniques that I would typically use, however there is no ONE right way to do everything. I encourage independent learning and going beyond the lesson. IF A STUDENT ONLY IS PRACTICING WHILE IN THE LESSON, WE CANNOT ADVANCE AS QUICKLY AS I PLAN. My philosophy lies in structure - such as teaching in appropriate amounts that are challenging, but not overwhelming. I will always ask students what they're interested in learning and work that into the lesson. But the main focus for beginners is to be comfortable with the fretboard and to have fun. I break lessons down into technique, theory, and whatever the student is particularly wanting to learn.
